Easter knitted chicks bring in a cool $4000

16 April 2024

Our knitted chicks flew out the door, making Easter that little bit cuter for everybody and raising vital funds for Harbour Hospice.

The results are in from our knitted chick Easter campaign. A total of 502 chicks were sold, raising an incredible $4016 for Harbour Hospice.

But wait - there's more. Thanks to the support of local papers, who ran stories on our cute campaign, we've recruited more than a dozen new volunteer knitters and knitting groups to join our volunteer knitters, meaning we can raise even more funds for Harbour Hospice next Easter.

The chicks were sold in selected hospice shops (Albany, Link Dr, Milford, Devonport, Silverdale and Warkworth) for $8 each, with a chocolate egg tucked inside.

It was Retail Services Manager Maria Baird who came up with the idea, after going for a walk with her neighbour who mentioned that she’d knitted these chicks as a fundraiser for her local hospice in the UK. Maria asked for the knitting pattern, passed it onto Volunteer Services Manager Vicki Parker, and then Vicki put a callout to our volunteers. More than a dozen put their hands up and got their knitting needles clicking in earnest for us.

Maria says she's thrilled with the results and can't wait to spread the cuteness even further next Easter.

"We are very, very grateful to our wonderful volunteer knitters, who dedicated hours of their time and energy to create the chicks for us. Without them, this would not have been possible. And now, with more knitters on board, next year’s Easter campaign will be even bigger.”

If you missed out on a knitted chick this year, make sure you get yourself one next Easter - because their purpose extends far beyond the chocolate egg. Just look how cute lunch has got!
