Harbour Hospice offers a range of programmes and support groups for current Hospice patients, carers and their whānau, and recently bereaved family/whānau members.
They are facilitated by members of our clinical and family support teams, at various times throughout the year, based on need. If transport is an issue for you, we might be able to arrange for a volunteer driver to help.
If you would like more information about any of our groups below, please contact your local Hospice or speak to one of your clinical team members.

Carers groups
Caring for a loved one with a life-limiting illness is an important and meaningful role. Your support will make a very real difference to the quality of life of the person you are caring for, and can have a hugely positive effect on their physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. Caring for an unwell person can also be demanding and it is vital that you get the support you need as well.
Harbour Hospice runs Carers Support Groups at each of our three sites which offer support and educational information, and which connect you with others in similar situations.
Bereavement groups
The time following the death of someone we love may at times be difficult and lonely. Our Family Support Team facilitates compassionate groups, which provide both connection and education to support you with your grief journey.
Open Doors day programme
Open doors is an informative, educational and social support programme for patients, their carers and whānau. It runs fortnightly at each of our three sites, with morning tea and lunch provided.
The programme is led by the hospice multidisciplinary team and provides a safe space in which you can enjoy social connection with others in a similar situation, and learn about helpful topics that empower you to make well-informed decisions about your present and future.
Topics may include:
The group is interactive and open, and is balanced with other interactive activities such as chair yoga, mindfulness and visualisation, compassionate touch (hand and foot massage).

I call it positive palliative care; it acknowledges the fact that I am not well but I’ve still got a life to live.
