Featuring vinyl records, typewriters, art, furniture and more, Hospice Retro is set to open its doors offering locals an eclectic mix of pre-owned treasures and collectables from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s.

Nestled in between Hospice Books and the Hospice Shop in Birkenhead, Hospice Retro will become the 18th Harbour Hospice Shop to serve North Shore communities from Devonport to Te Hana.

When doors officially open on Monday July 19, the shop will be full of retro-style finds with a special booth reserved for customers to listen to vinyl records.

Harbour Hospice, Retail Manager, Maria Baird says this is an exciting addition to the retail family, and is already proving popular with a recent call out for donations bringing many retro items out of the woodwork. “We’ve got some great pieces ready to find new homes thanks to the generosity of people bringing donations in from all areas of Auckland.”

The Hospice Shops rely on donations from the public with every dollar of instore profit directed back to the local Hospice service. “Many people don’t realise the incredible impact they’re making when they choose to donate, shop or volunteer with us. That impact is particularly significant considering the challenges we continue to face following the Covid lockdowns,” Maria said.

Collectively the shops bring in around $4 million net each year, with funds used to ensure that patients and families can access free specialist end of life services and support such as home visits, inpatient care, counselling, social and cultural support, day programmes, therapeutic massage and more.

While Covid Alert Level 3 and 4 lockdowns saw the shops lose valuable income, there is a silver lining, Maria said. “People are making more ethical-based purchasing decisions and want to support local which is great. We hope that Hospice Retro gives people a new space to fuel their retro fix, as well as giving back to a vital community cause.”
