Easter chick cuteness hits hospice shops

4 March 2024

How cute are these little Easter chicks! We’ll be selling these in selected hospice shops this week, with a chocolate egg tucked inside each one.

You’ll find them at our Warkworth (Queen St), Silverdale, Albany, Link Drive and Milford shops, with all proceeds going towards patient services.

It was Harbour Hospice Retail Services Manager Maria Baird who got the egg rolling on these. She went for a walk with her English neighbour and the neighbour mentioned that she’d knitted these chicks as a fundraiser for her local hospice in the UK to sell at Easter.

Maria thought it sounded like a great idea and asked for the knitting pattern. She passed it on to Volunteer Services Manager Vicki Parker who put a callout to our volunteers. More than a dozen keen knitters put up their hands to start producing these chicks, and their knitting needles have been flying ever since.

Volunteer life story writer Rachel Kinley from Warkworth is one of our knitters. She meets with her knitting group every Thursday and together the women have produced more than 180. We have other knitters working their magic on the North Shore and Hibiscus Coast too. Rachel says each chick takes about half an hour to knit, and then there’s time spent sewing them together and adding eyes and a beak.

Vicki and Maria are keen for this cute little fundraiser to grow and would love to bring on board more knitters.

If you’d like to spread the cuteness and join our band of merry chick knitters please email Vicki or call her on 027 767 5742.
