Change in direction

24 May 2022

Meet Malcolm – keen fisherman and creator of abstract art oil paintings. The father of four and grandfather of one has also joined Harbour Hospice’ retail team after working in the print industry for 25 years.

Malcolm – you became the storeperson for Orewa Hospice Shop in early 2022. What inspired your change in direction?

I’d been working in the same industry a long time and at times it could be pretty stressful. In the print industry everybody wants their job done yesterday and then the machine breaks down. Two years ago I was made redundant because of Covid-19. I thought at this stage of my life I need to make a real big change, so I decided to leave the print industry altogether.

When the hospice job came up on Seek I really liked the way the ad described the hospice culture. It said the culture was friendly and the expectation of people that work there is that they’re patient and kind to others around them.

And is the culture like that?

Yes, that’s how it is. Lots of different people work here and everybody understands we’re all different and gets on with it.

Would you recommend your job to others?

I would. It’s busy and there’s always something to do. And I like the fact we’re making money to help others.

What’s the most interesting thing that’s ever been donated to the shop? There have been a lot of gismos where nobody knows what they do!
