Catwalk Arts 2022

31 August 2022

It was fun, it was fabulous, and it raised $27,826 for Harbour Hospice. This year’s Catwalk Arts show on Saturday 27 August at Mahurangi College in Warkworth had the crowd going wild as clever creation after clever creation made its way down the runway.

Judges Tracey Paton, Matt Henderson and Philippa Stichbury had the unenviable task of selecting the best from a total of 30 wearable art ensembles across six categories. The Supreme Award went to designer Carolyn Gibson whose creation Rock Me Amadeus featured 115 handmade roses made from 950 hand-cut petals and a cello crafted from heavy plastic and covered in faux leather.

The judges were also hugely impressed with 12-year-old entrant Sophia Gilmour, who out-designed a number of adults to win two categories - Family and Amazing Aotearoa - with her Sluginker and Pukana creations.

The matinee show was opened by some of Catwalk Arts’ very first organisers - all volunteers who now range in age from their eighties to 97. Many of them had been a part of the very first fundraising events that hospice ran in Warkworth – skit shows in town halls, co-organiser Lesley Ingham explains. Those skit shows morphed into Harbour Hospice’s very first Catwalk Arts show in 2006. The group brought the house down when they stepped out onto the catwalk on Saturday in full costume to ham it up for the crowd.

This is the first Catwalk Arts show Harbour Hospice has been able to run since 2019 because of Covid-19. “We’ve had to postpone the event three times, so it was a case of fourth time lucky,” says Lesley.

Most of the entries came from outside Warkworth, and organisers are hoping to receive more entries from locals next year. There were also a lot of first-time entrants this year.
