Our 17th Art Exhibition & Sale: "Nothing's off limits"

1 June 2023

Our 17th annual Art Exhibition & Sale is on King's Birthday Weekend - come along! Here, we talk to one of the local artists whose art features in the show, Amanda Morton.

This Kings Birthday Weekend we’re hosting our 17th annual Art Exhibition & Sale at the Estuary Arts Centre in Orewa.

With 300 pieces of art from more than 70 local and national artists, and several new artists on board there'll be something for everyone from oils on canvas to water colours, ceramics, photography, sculptures and more.

Wainui mixed media artist Amanda Morton, who volunteers at the Estuary Arts Centre hanging exhibitions and teaching life drawing classes, is contributing her art for the third time. She says she loves being involved, knowing that “Hospice wouldn’t function without the support of its community”.

Amanda grew up in Australia and the United Kingdom and says she and her five siblings were all considered “fairly talented artists”. In her twenties she was billed as up-and-coming after one of her paintings made waves in a prominent Australian art competition.

“But then life got in the way,” she says. Amanda became a flight attendant, then lived in America for 17 years and had a family. She didn’t pick up a paintbrush again until 20 years later when her mother died and she inherited her mother’s art supplies.

Amanda likes to experiment with all sorts of mediums. "Nothing’s off limits as far as I’m concerned.”

She begins every piece with an idea or emotion in her mind and says they each bring joy and frustration.
