Syringe Driver Competency

Hospice New Zealand Syringe Driver education programme for registered health professionals

The Hospice New Zealand Syringe Driver Education Programme is designed for registered nurses working across Aged Residential Care (ARC) facilities, Primary Healthcare settings, and Hospices. The programme is endorsed by Hospice New Zealand and supports safe and effective syringe driver use in clinical practice.

Programme overview
This blended education programme combines online learning with a facilitated, face to face practical workshop, equipping registered nurses with the knowledge, clinical reasoning, and hands on experience required to safely set up and manage a BD BodyGuard™ syringe driver.

Programme structure
Online learning (approximately 2 hours)
The online component includes theory based learning, medication calculations, and assessments.

Participants must successfully complete all online assessments before attending the practical workshop.

In person practical workshop (2 hours)
The workshop focuses on practical application in a simulated learning environment and includes:

  • Knowledge checks
  • Observed, hands on activities
  • Opportunities to consolidate theoretical learning

Please note: Participation in the workshop does not constitute formal workplace competency sign off. Healthcare competency is context specific and must be demonstrated in practice in accordance with an organisation’s policies, procedures, and governance frameworks. Assessment and confirmation of competency remain the responsibility of the employer.
