Keen op shopper

16 June 2022

Meet Phoebe. Phoebe is 22 years old, she’s a twin and she loves op shopping with her Mum. She’s also one of our volunteers and in this quick Q&A she tells us why she loves volunteering at the Browns Bay Hospice Shop.

How long have you been volunteering for Phoebe?
This is my third year. I started just before Covid hit New Zealand.

What do you do in the shop?
I come in on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons, just for an hour and a half on Monday and Wednesday, and three hours on Friday. I’m mostly out the back sorting donations and pricing stock. We receive lots of donations so there’s always lots to sort. We get a lot of good stuff come in.

What inspired you to volunteer in the shop?
I really love op shopping with my Mum and this is my favourite shop in our local area. I wanted to give back to the community and I knew that by working in the shop I’d be helping people that are struggling. All the money that the shops raise goes into caring for people who need it. I’ve worked in a residential care facility before and I’ve seen how hard it is for the elderly when they are not well.

What’s the best part about volunteering in the shop?
The people I work with. They’re really caring and they look after me.

Has this role inspired you in other ways?
It’s made me realise that I really love working in retail and I’d like to have a paid job in retail too.
