Syringe Driver Competency

This course equips Registered Nurses with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to manage a subcutaneous syringe driver in their place of work. You will receive your certificate on passing a practical assessment and theory test.

There are two learning options to gain certification, both are endorsed by Hospice New Zealand.

OPTION 1: 3 hour workshop

Harbour Hospice offers 3 hour workshops throughout the year which cover the theoretical and practical requirements to gain Syringe Driver certification. This training can be delivered at your workplace by arrangement. Minimum of 6 and maximum of 12 attendees are required.

OPTION 2: Blended Learning - online theory and practical workshop

Hospice Waikato has developed an online learning site called PalEd and the Syringe Driver Competency Programme is now available for registered nurses and enrolled nurses employed by ARRC facilities and Hospices to complete. This programme is endorsed by Hospice New Zealand and will take around 2 hours to complete.

To register you will require a login to PalEd which can be obtained by emailing the PalEd Administrator paled@hospicewaikato.org.nz the following information:

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Job title
  • Name of ARRC facility or Hospice employed by

When you successfully pass the online syringe driver competency programme, email education@harbourhospice.org.nz to register for a 1 hour practical competency workshop to gain your full certificate of competency.

Duration: 2 hours online and 1 hour practical workshop
